These results confirm those of a previous study in Portuguese children using questionnaire data, showing that schools were an important source of variability in total PA (36.0%).16 A recent report from Katzmarzyk et al.17 using multi-country data (children aged 9–11 years) indicated a substantial disparity across countries, with Canadian schools explaining only 5.7% of the variability in MVPA, while Kenyan schools explained 49.9%, and Portuguese schools participating in the study explained 6.7% of the variance in MVPA time. In contrast to these results, Kristensen et al.22 reported an intraclass correlation close to zero in a Danish sample. These discrepancies in explained variance attributable to the school may reflect disparities in school location and overall characteristics, neighborhood SES differences, site specificities within and between countries, as well as sampling at the school level.

A major finding of this study was that the main fraction of MVPA variance (81.8%) was explained by children's individual characteristics. Consistent with previous data, boys engaged in more MVPA than girls and age was negatively associated with MVPA.23 However, the MVPA decline with age was similar in boys and in girls, since age-by-sex interaction was not statistically significant, which is contrary to other findings.24

BMI was not significantly associated with MVPA in this sample. Although overweight and obesity are generally linked to children's PA levels,25 available studies show inconsistent results. For example, Kettner et al.26 reported higher MVPA levels in overweight/obese than in normal weight German children, whereas Page et al.27 indicated that obese children from the UK were significantly less active than their non-obese peers. These discrepancies may be associated with different ways to assess MVPA, as well as with the cut-points used to define overweight and obesity. There is emerging evidence showing that adequate GMC and/or mature motor skills are associated with higher levels of PA during childhood. The present results confirmed this association, as higher GMC was associated with higher levels of MVPA. It was also shown that children from families with higher SES were less active, which supports the results from a study of Brazilian children.8

When considering the school-level correlates, it was found that playground dimension was the only statistically significant predictor, but was negatively related to children's MVPA. It is possible that other factors related to the playground are more important in relation to MVPA, such as the play facilities contained in the playground, and the quality and safety of the play area. A recent study with a large multi-country sample showed similar results, i.e., children with access to playground or sport equipment tended to comply less with the 60-minute daily MVPA recommendations.28 On the contrary, a previous study using a multi-level approach to identify school-level predictors of self-reported PA in Portuguese children16 showed associations with school size (positively), school setting (urban less than rural), type of playground area (disadvantage for schools without play facilities), frequency of PE classes (positively), PE class duration (negatively), and qualification of PE teachers (with qualification less than without qualification). Moreover, three other studies that explored associations between school contexts and children's MVPA did not explicitly consider the importance of children's individual characteristics.15,29 In summary, Nielsen et al.15 reported that the number of permanent facilities was positively associated with MVPA, whereas Lewis et al.29 indicated that the presence of a sports field was negatively associated with MVPA. In general, the existing studies have demonstrated that school-level characteristics explain a significant proportion of the variance in children's MVPA; however, the specific variables and direction of association varies among studies, which may be related to interactions among variables at the school- and child-levels.

This study is not without limitations. First, it is possible that the school audit may have overlooked relevant school characteristics; however, the authors mapped the most important characteristics commonly identified in prior research.30 Second, the use of total daily MVPA rather than its daily fragments (i.e., before, during, and after school) may not have been sensitive enough to detect school effects. It is important to keep in mind that this study did not investigate daily PA patterns, and that total daily MVPA is the most commonly used variable in this type of research. Third, care must be taken when trying to generalize these results to the Portuguese population of this age range. This study also had several strengths: first, the use of multilevel models with information at both the child and school levels; second, this study sampled children aged 5–11 years, which corresponds to an important time window in their growth and development; third, MVPA was objectively monitored using a device-based protocol; and fourth, data collection was based on highly standardized and reliable methods.

In conclusion, 18.2% of children's differences in MVPA were related to the schools they attended, leaving the majority of the variance explained by child-level characteristics. Sex, age, GMC, and SES were significantly, but differently, associated with children's MVPA. Within the school context, only playground dimension was associated, negatively, with children's MVPA. In sum, children's characteristics were more important than their school contexts in explaining variability in MVPA, although a significant proportion of the variance was explained by schools.
Funding
City council of Vouzela.
Conflicts of interest
The authors declare no conflicts of interest.
" "textoCompletoSecciones" => array:1 [ "secciones" => array:11 [ 0 => array:3 [ "identificador" => "xres1322276" "titulo" => "Abstract" "secciones" => array:4 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0005" "titulo" => "Objective" ] 1 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0010" "titulo" => "Methods" ] 2 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0015" "titulo" => "Results" ] 3 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0020" "titulo" => "Conclusions" ] ] ] 1 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "xpalclavsec1219605" "titulo" => "Keywords" ] 2 => array:3 [ "identificador" => "xres1322277" "titulo" => "Resumo" "secciones" => array:4 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0025" "titulo" => "Objetivo" ] 1 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0030" "titulo" => "Métodos" ] 2 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0035" "titulo" => "Resultados" ] 3 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "abst0040" "titulo" => "Conclusões" ] ] ] 3 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "xpalclavsec1219604" "titulo" => "Palavras-chave" ] 4 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0005" "titulo" => "Introduction" ] 5 => array:3 [ "identificador" => "sec0010" "titulo" => "Methods" "secciones" => array:5 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0015" "titulo" => "Sample" ] 1 => array:3 [ "identificador" => "sec0020" "titulo" => "Child-level correlates" "secciones" => array:4 [ 0 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0025" "titulo" => "Anthropometry" ] 1 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0030" "titulo" => "Gross motor coordination" ] 2 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0035" "titulo" => "Physical activity" ] 3 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0040" "titulo" => "Socioeconomic status" ] ] ] 2 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0045" "titulo" => "School-level correlates" ] 3 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0050" "titulo" => "Data quality control" ] 4 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0055" "titulo" => "Statistical analysis" ] ] ] 6 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0060" "titulo" => "Results" ] 7 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0065" "titulo" => "Discussion" ] 8 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0070" "titulo" => "Funding" ] 9 => array:2 [ "identificador" => "sec0075" "titulo" => "Conflicts of interest" ] 10 => array:1 [ "titulo" => "References" ] ] ] "pdfFichero" => "main.pdf" "tienePdf" => true "fechaRecibido" => "2018-06-01" "fechaAceptado" => "2018-09-19" "PalabrasClave" => array:2 [ "en" => array:1 [ 0 => array:4 [ "clase" => "keyword" "titulo" => "Keywords" "identificador" => "xpalclavsec1219605" "palabras" => array:4 [ 0 => "Child" 1 => "School environment" 2 => "Physical activity" 3 => "Multilevel modeling" ] ] ] "pt" => array:1 [ 0 => array:4 [ "clase" => "keyword" "titulo" => "Palavras-chave" "identificador" => "xpalclavsec1219604" "palabras" => array:4 [ 0 => "Criança" 1 => "Ambiente escolar" 2 => "Atividade física" 3 => "Modelagem multinível" ] ] ] ] "tieneResumen" => true "resumen" => array:2 [ "en" => array:3 [ "titulo" => "Abstract" "resumen" => "Objective
Children's differences in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity levels are not at random.
