Abstract

We analyzed the prevalence of Cryptosporidium sp. in 156 infants with acute diarrhea and 80 controls from February to June 1990. The study was carried out at the Hospital Geral de Pediatria of the Maternal-Infantile Institute of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Cryptosporidium sp. was detected in 6.4% of infants with diarrhea but not in controls. The clinical status and the disease evolution were similar among Cryptosporidium-positive and Cryptosporidium-negative acute diarrhea patients.
