Abstract

Turner syndrome is a well-known cause of propotionate short stature in girls, but its frequency among these patients must vary in different populations. In Brazil, the cytogenetic study of 38 short girls without psychoneuromotor retardation, and without taking into account the presence or absence of dysmorphic signs, revealed that at least 1:8 had Turner syndrome. This is an unexpectedly high frequency in a population which is largely subject to adverse environmental conditions leading to growth deficiency.
