Asthma diagnosis and treatmentHigh-resolution computed tomography scan and airway remodeling in children with severe asthma
Section snippets
Methods
Thirty-seven children were prospectively included between July 2000 and January 2002. These children attended the clinic every 2 to 3 months for at least 2 years, and symptoms, bronchodilator use, exacerbations, and pulmonary function test results were regularly recorded. Asthma was diagnosed according to American Thoracic Society (ATS) criteria.7 All children had severe asthma in accordance with the ATS workshop recently reviewed by Wenzel.8 Severe asthma was defined as the presence of 1 major
Results
The characteristics of the patients are described in Table I, and results of tests for non-HRCT variables are given in Table II.
Discussion
In children with severe asthma, bronchial thickening as assessed by the BWT score on HRCT was correlated with RBM thickening and NO production by the airway wall. Although these correlations were not strongly significant and did not remain significant when correcting for multiple comparisons using the Bonferroni procedure, to our knowledge, this is the first pediatric study suggesting a concordance between radiological findings and both a classic parameter of remodeling (RBM thickness) and a
